How to do it

  1. Face a wall and place both hands on it at chest height.
  2. Step one foot straight back, toes pointing at the wall, and press the heel into the floor.
  3. Keep the back leg straight and lean gently toward the wall until you feel a stretch in the upper calf.
  4. Hold, breathing slowly.
  5. Now bend the back knee slightly, keeping the heel down, to shift the stretch lower toward the Achilles and soleus. Hold again.
  6. Switch legs and repeat both versions.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the back heel lift off the floor.
  • Turning the back foot outward, which reduces the stretch.
  • Standing too close to the wall for a meaningful lean.
  • Bouncing instead of holding steady.

Breathing and tempo

Breathing: Steady, relaxed breathing; exhale as you lean in.
